Mountain Equipment Co-op
Mountain Equipment Co-op approached us to reimagine the conventional “big-box” store by going two-storey. They also understood that some buildings may only be needed for a few years, so we asked: why not design it to be disassembled and re-used elsewhere? We developed a kit of parts using a hybrid of prefabricated glued-laminated post-and-beam construction, concrete and steel deck floors and SIP wall panels, carefully detailed to allow for de-construction. The building is LEED® Gold certified, recognizing its high-performance approach to sustainability, and it also earned a LEED Innovation Credit for being designed to be entirely disassembled and re-used in the future. We also reused natural materials such as post-industrial plywood ‘peeler core’ logs for the entry canopy. David Moses was lead engineer while at Equilibrium Consulting.
