Makwa Waakaa’igan
The Makwa Waakaa’igan (meaning Bear’s Den in Anishinaabemowin) Indigenous Center for Cultural Excellence is to be built on Algoma University’s Campus, intentionally placed alongside a former residential school. The center will serve as a safe space for visitors to learn from and engage in Indigenous heritage as well as a place for truth telling, healing, and cultural preservation to take place. The building connects to the land through its expansive green roof, which curves to the ground and provides plants to be used in the interactive kitchen. Once completed, the center will comprise of a hall for both lectures and recitals, classrooms and offices, exhibition space which will be used for sacred ceremonies, a greenhouse, and teaching kitchen.
