Earlier this October, the Moses team had the privilege of joining wood enthusiasts and industry leaders for a tour of the Romeo Malette Forest and GreenFirst Sawmill in Timmins, Ontario, a key part of our economy and source of jobs in Ontario. We got an up-close look at FSC-certified forests and learned how they foster sustainable growth while collaborating with local First Nations for responsible harvesting.
Did you know? Of the 70% of the forest area allowed to be harvested, only 1% is taken each year! And even then, the forest is managed in cycles, ensuring different areas are only harvested when they’re ready. Walking through an active harvest area can feel overwhelming, but stepping back, you realize that this 1% is a small fraction of Ontario’s vast forests, all part of a sustainable approach. It was truly eye-opening to see firsthand how careful forest management works, reaffirming that when we specify lumber, we’re choosing renewable materials and not depleting resources. And a fun reminder: lumber literally grows on trees!
