TimberFever® 2025: Building “Third Spaces” for Connection and Community

This year marked the 11th annual TimberFever® Design-Build Competition, presented by Moses Structural Engineers, bringing together architecture and engineering students from universities across Canada and the United States.

Held at Toronto Metropolitan University, 16 student teams worked side-by-side over three days to design and construct wooden structures inspired by the 2025 theme, “Third Spaces” — welcoming environments between home and work that encourage connection and community.

A highlight of this year’s competition was the introduction of the Accessibility Award, inspired by our sponsor StopGap, recognizing inclusive, barrier-free design in public spaces. Industry mentors, judges, and volunteers — including Carpenters Local 27 — offered hands-on support throughout the weekend.

Congratulations to 20² (Twenty Squared) for taking first place, followed by Komorebi in second and Point Three in third. The Public Vote Award went to team Free Flow, whose design resonated strongly with the community.

With nearly 1,000 students having participated in TimberFever since its inception, the event continues to grow as a platform for collaboration, creativity, and mentorship — shaping the next generation of designers and builders.
